In the Kampong Tralach District of Cambodia, children participation activities are an important component of World Vision’s Area Development Programs.
Children's Clubs were developed to provide safe havens for children to play and learn how protect themselves from abuse, neglect, and exploitation.
World Vision has provided these clubs with building facilities, playground equipment, educational materials, and training for youth leaders to help them organise club activities and teach the younger members.
Through role-play, games, and story telling, these youth leaders in their mid-to-late teens share with children the importance of knowing their rights and how to protect themselves from dangers that lurk in their communities, such as child traffickers.
19-year old Sorphearom, one of 16 student leaders for the Children's Club in Kralach Village, says it has made a real difference for his community.
“I have noticed a decline in crime and abusive behavior since I joined the club almost two years ago,” he said, going on to say that parents have also seen the benefits of their children learning about proper hygiene and take comfort in knowing their children are playing in a safe environment.
The club in Kralach is open on Thursdays and Sundays when schools are out of session and currently has around 160 regular attendees.
Children's Clubs were developed in Cambodia in 1999 by World Vision in partnership with Village Development Committees, local schools, and children.
These clubs were initiated on the belief that children are not passive recipients of abuse in need of protection, but have potential to be actively involved in strengthening their own development.
