Children in crisis: World Vision’s response |
|
|
|
Urgent issues
|
World Vision believes:
* Adults have a responsibility to look after and protect all children, not just their own
* Children have a right to survival, food, family, identity and
education, in keeping with the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child
* Child exploitation and labour, child abuse and homelessness are caused in part by poverty
* Children in crisis deserve protection, community reintegration and a
chance for happiness, no matter what their circumstances

Sponsorship protects children
In sponsorship areas, community groups help to combat the factors that lead to the abuse or neglect of children.
With encouragement and advice from World Vision, these groups tackle
domestic and community violence, teach children their rights and ensure
there's a healthy balance of school, work and play.
Increased income in the community, often through small
businesses which involve the whole family, means that children are less
likely to be sent away into exploitation or trafficking situations.
Sponsorship also identifies the neediest children in the
community, including one-parent or orphaned families. These children
receive extra care and protection to help them finish school and
improve their future opportunities.
Asia's invisible children
While sponsorship works to alleviate the factors which push children
into crisis, specialised programmes offer individual care and
rehabilitation for children affected.
From street children's centres in Yangon and Phnom Penh
to family violence shelters in Ulaan Bataar and non-formal education
classes in Dhaka, World Vision is giving the street children of Asia a
new sense of hope and security.
World Vision works with these children towards the best
possible outcome - reintegration with their families. If this is not
possible, they are helped with vocational skills and safe homes so they
can look after themselves without fear of exploitation.
Specialists in child protection
World Vision has been working with issues of child protection in Asia
for over 15 years and is regarded as one of the regional specialists.
In partnership with governments and many other agencies
concerned with child rights violations, World Vision prepares and
advises on reports aiming to bring changes in attitudes towards
children of the region.
World Vision's delivery of disaster relief includes a
prompt response to children's issues. They ensure appropriate medical
care and nutrition for children and work to reunite families separated
by disaster or conflict.
They also set up child-friendly spaces within emergency
camps, giving children a safe place to play and learn in the middle of
a disaster zone. |
