In April 2006, violent riots erupted in the streets of Dili, East Timor's capital city. Rioters ransacked and set fire to homes, looted businesses, and caused the death of 21 people.
Since then, the violence has resulted in around 150,000 people fleeing their homes in search of safety at makeshift camps and shelters in and around Dili. Ten thousand of those displaced are children under the age of five.
While political stability and peace are being restored with assistance from the international community, refugees are facing food shortages and an uncertain timeline for when they will be able to return home to rebuild their lives. Articles and angles: |
