Literally living on the street, cyclone Nargis survivors try to go on with their lives.

Cyclone response overview
Updates on AlertNet

World Vision Myanmar has commenced its response to the needs of families living in World Vision project areas in the aftermath of Cyclone Nargis's deadly trail.

Drinking water reached families sheltering in a school building in Hlaing Thar Yar ADP on May 5. Around 1000 people including many children moved to the school on the night of May 2 when their own dwellings were destroyed.

One third grader said, "We ran out into the street, then into this school when the winds became so strong." She added, “My two big brothers ran out too. There were a lot of people on the streets.”

Just in this area, around 16,000 people are living homeless in three separate camps. Throughout the area where World Vision works 12 camps have been created to shelter around 100,000 people.

World Vision Myanmar is providing assistance in five area development programmes in Yangon. Here, an estimated 78,847 displaced people are sheltering in 71 crowded and under-resourced camps.

As an immediate response, World Vision has distributed rice and water to the five areas.

Planning for the next phase of response, World Vision Myanmar is working with the Department of Social Welfare, Relief and Resettlement at their request.  Urgent needs include medicine supplies, roofing materials, chainsaws, tents and tarps to help the people in other affected areas in the delta.  The volume of requested materials within the country falls far short of what will be required.

World Vision Myanmar is working in direct contact with the ministry and Minister.

This afternoon (May 7), World Vision Myanmar's National Director is meeting the Minister to submit World Vision Myanmar's plan to assist five neighbouring areas where World Vision has not worked before. These areas, all of which are badly hit, are Pyapon, Bogalay, Mawlamyaing Gyun, Daydaye and Kyaik Latt in the delta.

According to the government report and local reports, these are the areas worst hit. World Vision will be in a good position to offer relief using bases in nearby programme areas for assessment and planning.

Preparations for logistics, staff and assessment are already under way, with five staff expected to begin work in these areas as soon as details are confirmed.

The full extent of damages to infrastructure, water and human lives is still being assessed.
