A powerful 7.3 magnitude earthquake struck West Java, Indonesia on Sept 2, 2009 killing 70 people and leaving 30 missing. Tens of thousands of homes were destroyed, displacing more than 82,000 people, including children.

Children and their families are sheltering under plastic sheets and tents. Struggling to cope with cold winter nights in the mountains and lack of access to basic necessities, children are showing signs of diarrhoea, pneumonia and skin disease. The government estimates that 3,000 schools were destroyed and 116,545 homes damaged in Tasikmalaya, Garut, Ciamis, Bandung and Cianjur districts.

World Vision rushed to the hardest-hit areas with emergency blankets, plastic sheeting and baby hygiene kits for hundreds. The next step will be to help Indonesian children and their families be better prepared for natural disasters by building back stronger homes and schools and ensuring access to knowledge, skills and services that will help prepare for and reduce the impact of natural disasters.
